Greensboro, NC – December 3, 2018 – The SHIELD Mentor Program is excited to announce the SHIELD Saturday Leadership Academy, a 12-week leadership building intensive program for Greensboro youth (grades 4-12). The program runs from February 3, 2018 to April 28, 2018 and is structured around weekly group mentoring sessions held on the campus of UNCG. Sessions will be held every Saturday from 1 PM – 3 PM. Space is limited to 45 youth and registration deadline is January 24, 2018. Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis and are available online at http://www.shieldmentor.org.

“We are excited about the opportunity for youth participants to increase self-awareness, refine dreams and goals, create a plan and work with mentors to guide them toward their vision of the future,” says Precious McKoy, Founder/Executive Director.

The SHIELD Saturday Leadership Academy kicks off with an upcoming Open House session scheduled for Saturday, January 13, 2018 from 1:30 – 3 PM at the McGirt Horton Library. It is a great way for you and your child to find out all about the application process and the activities that we will do during the Saturday Leadership Academy!

“This initiative seeks to bring together a select group of elementary, middle and high school youth from Greensboro and surrounding communities, public and private schools, and many different personal backgrounds from a wide cross-section of ethnic, cultural, and economic backgrounds who will be mentored to develop themselves as leaders and contribute their ideas and efforts to address challenges that they face,” McKoy added.

“To date we have served over 500 young people since our inception in 2008 and we plan to continue to grow exponentially to cultivate more youth leaders in our community,” she said.

Together, youth and adult volunteers participate in interactive workshops, team building exercises, leadership development, and focus on a specific theme, such as goal setting, decision making, conflict resolution, effective communication and teamwork. The youth mentoring program is an opportunity for youth to develop a personal plan for success through fun, interactive learning sessions with peers.
